Number Talks
Last week, we had another special visitor! Mr. Courtemanche, our district math coach, visited both classrooms to do a Number Talk. Number Talks are student-lead conversations around a string of equations. They are "a short, ongoing, daily routine that provides students with meaningful ongoing practice with computation." Number Talks help "develop computational frequency because the expectation is that they will use number relationships and the structures of numbers to add, subtract, multiply, and divide." Number Talks are also fun and spark great conversation! Ask your child about it!
Technology Visits!
Last week, Mr. L., our district Technology Integrationist, visited both classrooms with exciting new apps for us to try! Wednesday, he taught the second graders about Edutyping. This is a typing program that students use to learn proper typing positioning and techniques. On Thursday, Mr. L. came to both classrooms to show us the app Epic! Epic is a wonderful app with an enormous library of real, published books. The app offers a huge range of books, from graphic novels, to nonfiction, and even videos to further student learning. We had a great time celebrating this wonderful technology in our classrooms!
